Pat Cummins Set to Play a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"It's clear that time is getting short and various factors around that, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the starting games regardless. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
