Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals using these treatments should be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a return to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Doctors suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers emphasize that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
