Wolff Preparing to Sell Shareholding Pricing Mercedes Formula 1 Team at £4.6bn

Team Principal Wolff has led the Mercedes team to historic success in Formula 1

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to offload a portion of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction estimates the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – after McLaren was appraised at £3.5bn in a change of ownership structure last September.

Wolff, who holds one-third of Mercedes F1, plans to divest a shareholding approximately 5%.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team principal and CEO if the sale goes through.

Ownership Structure

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes and chemicals giant Ineos, who both hold a third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We are providing no comment on the matter. The governance of Mercedes F1 will remain unaltered, and each shareholder are fully committed to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in Formula One."

Valuation Increase

This arrangement would represent a significant increase in worth of Mercedes F1 since Ineos Group bought its stake for £208 million in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the expansion in valuations of Formula 1 outfits recently as a consequence of the growing popularity of Formula 1 around the world.

This trend was evident with the success of the Formula 1 film starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and earned over $630m (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

It is the actor's top-grossing film and the highest-earning sports movie to date.

Current Performance

The Mercedes team are second in the team standings, trailing McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix remaining this season.

Mercedes' primary racer British driver George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 races this year and is fourth in the drivers' championship behind McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

The team secured a unprecedented eight consecutive constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
